Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of green cabbage, finely chopped (about 6 cups)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup white rice, rinsed
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 23 cloves garlic, minced

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs (such as thyme or oregano)

Optional Toppings

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or parmesan)
  • Fresh chopped parsley or dill for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the cabbage finely, dice the onion and garlic, rinse the rice thoroughly, and have your ground beef ready. This preparation ensures a smooth cooking process.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef and Aromatics: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked with no pink remaining. Add the diced onions and garlic and sauté until fragrant and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add Cabbage and Rice: Stir in the chopped cabbage and uncooked, rinsed rice, mixing well to combine all the flavors evenly before adding liquids.
  4. Pour in Tomato Sauce and Seasonings: Add the tomato sauce to the skillet along with salt, black pepper, paprika, and dried herbs. Stir thoroughly to coat all ingredients and distribute the seasoning evenly.
  5. Transfer to Baking Dish and Bake: Pour the mixture into a greased casserole dish and cover tightly with foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45-50 minutes or until the rice and cabbage are tender.
  6. Add Cheese and Finish Baking: Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top, and bake uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.

Notes

  • Use fresh cabbage rather than pre-shredded for better texture and flavor.
  • Rinse rice before cooking to remove excess starch and prevent a gummy casserole.
  • Brown the meat well to deepen the savory flavor of the dish.
  • Cover the casserole tightly when baking to trap steam and cook the rice thoroughly.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes after baking to allow flavors to meld and for easier serving.
