Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (lean or regular)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 package pre-made bread dough or biscuit dough (about 16 oz)
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce or pizza sauce
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil (for sautéing and brushing)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Beef Mixture: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add butter or olive oil. Sauté the minced onion and garlic until fragrant. Add the ground beef and cook until browned and fully cooked through, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess fat, then stir in the tomato or pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for a few minutes to blend the flavors.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Roll out the pre-made bread or biscuit dough on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle. You can also gently stretch the dough by hand to achieve a thin but sturdy layer.
  3. Assemble the Garbage Bread: Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly over the dough. Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese on top. For extra cheesiness, add layers of cheese by folding the dough or sprinkling between layers of meat.
  4. Roll and Seal: Carefully roll the dough from one end to the other, creating a tight log filled with beef and cheese. Pinch the edges and seams firmly to seal the filling inside. Place the rolled dough seam side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake Until Golden: Brush the top of the roll with melted butter or olive oil to create a golden crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Use room temperature dough to make rolling easier without tearing.
  • Do not overfill with beef or cheese to ensure the dough seals properly and prevents leaks.
  • Brush the dough generously with butter for enhanced crust color and flavor.
  • Allow the bread to rest slightly before slicing so the cheese sets and avoids excessive ooze.
  • Optional: Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top just before baking for extra savory flavor.
