Ingredients

Scale

Fruit Filling

  • 2 medium firm apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pats

Pastry & Finishing

  • 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry (approximately 9x9 inches), thawed
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin, even pieces. Toss the slices with lemon juice to prevent browning, then mix in the sugar and cinnamon evenly to create a sweet and spiced apple filling.
  2. Cut the Puff Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut the pastry into small 3-inch squares, each square serving as one tart base.
  3. Assemble the Tarts: Place a small pat of butter in the center of each pastry square. Arrange the apple slices over the butter in a fan-like pattern, ensuring an even but moderate amount to avoid sogginess.
  4. Add Egg Wash: In a small bowl, combine the beaten egg and water to make the egg wash. Use a brush to coat the edges of each pastry square with the egg wash, which will help achieve a golden, glossy crust when baked.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Place the assembled tarts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden and the apples are tender.

Notes

  • Slice apples uniformly for consistent baking and attractive presentation.
  • Keep puff pastry chilled until ready to assemble to maintain maximum flakiness.
  • Do not overfill the pastry squares to prevent soggy crusts or spilling during baking.
  • Use parchment paper on baking sheets to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  • Check tarts at 20 minutes as ovens vary; avoid over-baking.
