Taco Shells with Cheese

Taco Shells with Cheese

Taco Shells with Cheese are crispy, golden shells made entirely from melted cheese, offering a delicious and crunchy alternative to traditional taco shells. Perfectly crispy with a rich, savory flavor, these gluten-free and low-carb shells are quick and easy to make, ideal for snacks, appetizers, or a flavorful twist on taco night.

Ingredients

Cheese

  • Shredded Cheese (Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend) – about 1/4 cup per shell

Spices (Optional)

  • Chili powder, paprika, cumin, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, chipotle powder, or smoked paprika to taste

Other Ingredients

  • Nonstick Cooking Spray – for greasing the baking surface

Optional Toppings

  • Fresh herbs (cilantro, oregano, thyme)
  • Finely chopped jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Place Cheese on Baking Sheet: Lightly spray the parchment with nonstick cooking spray. Evenly spread about 1/4 cup of shredded cheese per shell in small circles on the baking sheet, leaving space between each one.
  3. Bake Until Golden and Crispy: Bake the cheese rounds for 5 to 7 minutes, watching closely as the cheese bubbles, then turns golden brown and crispy around the edges.
  4. Shape the Shells: Remove immediately from the oven and use a spatula to lift each cheese round. Quickly drape it over a taco holder, rolling pin, or the edge of a bowl to shape into a taco shell while still pliable.
  5. Let Cool and Harden: Allow the shaped shells to cool completely so they firm up properly. Once cooled, they are ready to be filled with your favorite taco ingredients.

Notes

  • Use pre-shredded cheese with anti-caking agents for more even melting and crisping.
  • Keep a close eye on baking time to avoid burning the cheese shells.
  • Shape the cheese shells immediately after baking while the cheese is still pliable to prevent cracking.
  • Experiment with different cheese types and combinations to find your preferred flavor and texture.
  • Store the shells in an airtight container away from moisture to maintain crispiness.
