Ingredients

Scale

Mushrooms

  • 20 fresh button or cremini mushrooms

Cheeses

  • 4 oz cream cheese or ricotta
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar for cheesy variations

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • Fresh herbs (2 tbsp parsley, 1 tsp thyme, or rosemary, finely chopped)

Additional Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter, for sautéing
  • Optional proteins: 1/4 cup cooked bacon bits, sausage, or nuts (walnuts or pine nuts)
  • Optional: red pepper flakes or diced jalapenos for spice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mushrooms: Gently wipe the mushrooms clean with a damp cloth. Remove the stems carefully and set aside. Hollow out just enough space in the caps to make room for the filling without breaking them.
  2. Make the Filling: Finely chop the reserved mushroom stems. In a skillet, sauté them with minced garlic and chopped onions in olive oil or butter until softened. Transfer to a bowl and mix with cream cheese or ricotta, Parmesan cheese, fresh herbs, breadcrumbs, and any optional ingredients like bacon or nuts. Stir well to combine.
  3. Stuff the Mushrooms: Using a spoon, fill each mushroom cap generously with the prepared filling. Press lightly to pack the filling firmly without causing overflow.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Arrange the stuffed mushrooms on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and bubbling.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Once baked, sprinkle with additional fresh herbs or extra Parmesan cheese if desired. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • Don’t overfill the mushroom caps to avoid spilling during baking.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for better texture and flavor.
  • Let stuffed mushrooms rest for a minute after baking to allow the filling to set.
  • Lightly grease the baking sheet to prevent sticking and promote even browning.
  • Combine creamy and crunchy ingredients like cheese and toasted breadcrumbs for a delightful texture contrast.
