Scalloped Potatoes

This creamy and cheesy scalloped potatoes recipe is an easy-to-make, comforting side dish featuring tender layers of starchy potatoes baked in a rich, luscious sauce with melted cheese and a golden, crispy top. Perfect for holiday feasts or everyday dinners, it pairs wonderfully with a variety of mains and can be made ahead for convenience.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 4 to 5 medium Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled (optional) and sliced 1/8-inch thick

Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch/gluten-free blend for GF)
  • 2 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (reserve 1/2 cup for topping)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Wash, peel if desired, and slice the potatoes evenly about 1/8-inch thick to ensure uniform cooking.
  2. Make the Creamy Sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and chopped onions and cook until softened. Whisk in flour to make a roux, cooking for about 1 minute. Gradually pour in the heavy cream while whisking continuously until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and stir in most of the shredded cheese, reserving some for the topping.
  3. Layer the Potatoes: Butter a baking dish and arrange a layer of potato slices evenly. Lightly season with salt and black pepper. Spoon some of the creamy sauce over the potatoes. Repeat layering potatoes, seasoning, and sauce until all is used, finishing with the remaining cheese on top.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the top turns golden brown and the sauce is bubbly.
  5. Let It Rest: Allow the scalloped potatoes to rest for 10 minutes before serving to let the sauce thicken further and flavors meld beautifully.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline to slice potatoes uniformly for even cooking.
  • Avoid overlapping potato slices too much to ensure proper texture and pretty layers.
  • Season each potato layer lightly with salt and pepper to enhance flavor.
  • Choose full-fat dairy like heavy cream and real butter for rich texture and taste.
  • Let the dish rest after baking so slices hold together when portioned.
