Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound mild or spicy Italian sausage
  • 1 package (about 16 ounces) store-bought potato gnocchi
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh herbs (basil or parsley), chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brown the Sausage: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage, breaking it apart with a spatula, and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage from the pan and set aside, leaving the flavorful drippings behind.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics and Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and bell peppers. Cook for 4-5 minutes until softened. Toss in minced garlic and sauté for another 30 seconds until fragrant, making sure not to burn it.
  3. Cook the Gnocchi: Add the gnocchi to the pan and cook, stirring frequently, for 3-4 minutes until they start to puff up and develop a slight golden crust. This adds a wonderful texture to the dish.
  4. Combine Ingredients and Add Cream: Return the cooked sausage to the skillet. Pour in the heavy cream and stir everything together. Let the mixture simmer gently for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the gnocchi beautifully.
  5. Finish With Cheese and Herbs: Sprinkle in grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh herbs such as parsley or basil. Stir gently to combine, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Choose quality sausage: Good-flavored sausage elevates this simple meal instantly.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan: Cook gnocchi in batches if needed to get a nice sear.
  • Use fresh herbs: Adding fresh herbs at the end brightens the whole dish.
  • Adjust the creaminess: Add more cream or broth to get the sauce consistency you love.
  • Keep an eye on the garlic: It cooks fast and can turn bitter if burnt.
