Mixed Berry Jam

Mixed Berry Jam

Homemade Mixed Berry Jam blends fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries with simple ingredients for a sweet and tart spread. Perfect for toast, yogurt, or gifting, this easy-to-make jam captures the vibrant flavors of summer berries and can be customized to suit your taste or dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit

  • 4 cups fresh mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries)

Sweetener

  • 2 cups granulated sugar (adjustable to taste)

Acid & Thickener

  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon pectin (optional, for thicker jam)

Other

  • 1/4 cup water (to help cook berries evenly)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Berries: Thoroughly wash all berries. Remove stems and hull strawberries. Chop large strawberries while leaving smaller berries whole to maintain texture.
  2. Mash the Berries and Combine Ingredients: In a large pot, gently crush the berries using a potato masher or fork to release their juices. Add sugar, lemon juice, and water; stir until well combined.
  3. Cook the Jam Mixture: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. Once boiling, reduce heat to simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-30 minutes until thickened to your liking.
  4. Test the Jam for Doneness: Perform the plate test by dropping a small spoonful of jam onto a chilled plate. Let it cool for a minute, then run your finger through it. If it wrinkles and doesn’t flood back, the jam is ready.
  5. Jar and Store: Pour the hot jam into sterilized jars leaving some headspace. Seal tightly and allow to cool at room temperature. Refrigerate or process in a hot water bath for longer shelf life.

Notes

  • Use ripe berries that are fully ripe but not overly soft or moldy for the best flavor.
  • Stir consistently during cooking to prevent burning or sticking.
  • Be patient during thickening; jam thickens further as it cools.
  • Ensure jars are properly sterilized to safely preserve the jam and extend shelf life.
  • Adjust sugar quantity to your taste, starting lower if you prefer tarter jam since you can add more gradually if needed.
