Homemade Crispy Ground Beef Tacos

Homemade Crispy Ground Beef Tacos are a quick, flavorful, and satisfying dinner option featuring fresh, crispy corn tortilla shells filled with perfectly seasoned ground beef. Ideal for family dinners or casual gatherings, this recipe delivers restaurant-quality tacos at home in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Ground Beef Mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tbsp taco seasoning
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Taco Shells

  • 8 small corn tortillas
  • Cooking oil (for frying)

Toppings

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • Optional: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced jalapeños, chopped cilantro, lime wedges, sour cream, guacamole

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ground Beef: Heat a skillet over medium heat, then add the ground beef. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spatula, until browned and cooked through (about 6-8 minutes). Stir in diced onions, minced garlic, taco seasoning, salt, and pepper, cooking another 2-3 minutes to blend the flavors thoroughly.
  2. Crisp the Tortillas: Pour cooking oil into a frying pan to cover about 1/4 inch depth and heat over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully place one tortilla in the oil, cooking for about 30 seconds to 1 minute per side until crispy and golden. Gently fold the tortilla in half with tongs while frying to create the classic taco shell shape. Remove to paper towels to drain excess oil and repeat with remaining tortillas.
  3. Assemble Your Tacos: Spoon a generous portion of the seasoned ground beef into each crispy tortilla shell. Immediately sprinkle shredded cheese over the hot beef to allow it to melt slightly. Add desired toppings and serve while still warm and crunchy.

Notes

  • Use fresh tortillas for best results; slightly stale tortillas tend to crack while frying.
  • Fry only one or two tortillas at a time to maintain hot oil and achieve optimal crispiness.
  • Drain excess oil from fried tortillas using paper towels to keep tacos crispy without greasiness.
  • Adjust seasoning of ground beef after tasting to ensure balanced flavor before assembling tacos.
  • Keep assembled tacos warm in a 200°F oven to maintain crispness until serving.
