Ingredients

Scale

Fish and Coating

  • 1 lb white fish fillets (cod, tilapia, or halibut), pat dry
  • 1 cup seasoned flour or batter (flour mixed with paprika, garlic powder, salt, or a wet batter with beer or sparkling water)
  • Vegetable or canola oil for frying (enough to fill a deep skillet about 2 inches)

Tortillas

  • 8 soft corn or flour tortillas

Toppings

  • 2 cups shredded cabbage (thinly sliced)
  • 12 lime wedges per taco
  • 1 ripe avocado, sliced (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro, roughly chopped (optional)

Creamy Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayo or yogurt base
  • Spices to taste (chipotle, jalapeño, lime juice, salt)

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Ingredients: Slice cabbage thinly and prepare any toppings like lime wedges, cilantro, and avocado. Pat fish fillets dry so the batter sticks better.
  2. Make the Batter or Dredge: Mix seasoned flour with paprika, garlic powder, and salt, or prepare a wet batter using beer or sparkling water for extra crunch.
  3. Heat the Oil: Pour vegetable or canola oil into a deep skillet and heat to 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer to maintain temperature.
  4. Fry the Fish: Dip each fish fillet into the batter or dredge, then gently place in hot oil. Fry 3-4 minutes per side until golden and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  5. Warm Your Tortillas: Warm tortillas in a dry skillet or wrapped in foil in the oven to keep them soft and pliable.
  6. Assemble Your Tacos: Layer each tortilla with fried fish, a handful of cabbage slaw, drizzle creamy sauce, add fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lime.

Notes

  • Keep fish fillets dry before battering for extra crispiness.
  • Maintain steady oil temperature to avoid soggy, greasy fish.
  • Fry in batches to prevent overcrowding and temperature drops.
  • Drain fried fish on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Use fresh tortillas warmed gently for the best texture and taste.
