Base Ingredients
- 4 thick slices of slightly stale or day-old bread (brioche, challah, or your choice)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Prepare the Custard Mixture: In a wide shallow bowl, whisk together 2 eggs, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until fully combined and smooth.
- Cut the Bread: Trim the crusts off the bread slices if desired, then cut each slice into 3 or 4 evenly sized sticks, approximately 1 inch wide.
- Soak the Bread Sticks: Dunk each bread stick into the custard mixture, turning to coat all sides, and let them soak for about 15 seconds. Be gentle to prevent the sticks from falling apart.
- Heat the Pan and Add Butter: Warm a non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons butter and melt until bubbly but not browned.
- Cook the French Toast Sticks: Place the soaked bread sticks in the pan without crowding. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve Warm: Transfer cooked sticks to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess butter. Serve immediately with maple syrup or your preferred toppings.
Notes
- Use day-old or slightly stale bread to soak custard better without getting mushy.
- Don’t over-soak the bread sticks; a quick dip prevents sogginess.
- Cut sticks evenly for consistent cooking.
- Cook on medium heat to avoid burning and ensure even browning.
- Mixing a little oil with butter can help prevent the butter from burning while cooking.
