Ingredients

Scale

Mushrooms and Fresh Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh button mushrooms, cleaned and patted dry
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced (or 1 tsp garlic powder)
  • Optional: 1 tbsp fresh parsley or thyme, chopped

Coating

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour as substitute)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs)
  • 2 large eggs (or flax eggs/aquafaba for vegan option)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Cooking

  • Vegetable oil or olive oil for frying (enough to deep fry, about 2 cups)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Mushrooms: Gently clean the button mushrooms with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. Pat them completely dry to help the coating adhere better.
  2. Prepare the Garlic Coating: In a shallow bowl, mix the flour, minced garlic (or garlic powder), salt, and pepper. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs with optional herbs and Parmesan if using.
  3. Coat the Mushrooms: Dip each mushroom first into the flour mixture, shaking off excess, then into the beaten eggs, and finally coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture. Ensure each mushroom is fully covered for maximum crispiness.
  4. Fry Until Golden: Heat oil in a deep skillet or saucepan over medium heat to about 350°F (175°C). Fry mushrooms in batches for 3–4 minutes each, turning occasionally until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the bites to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  5. Serve Warm: Serve the mushroom bites immediately while hot and crispy. Pair with your favorite dipping sauces or garnish with fresh chopped parsley or extra Parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • Pick firm, fresh mushrooms to prevent sogginess.
  • Pat mushrooms dry thoroughly before coating to ensure crispiness.
  • Maintain oil temperature to avoid burning or greasy bites.
  • Fry in small batches to retain oil heat and even crisping.
  • Using panko breadcrumbs results in a lighter, crunchier crust than regular breadcrumbs.
  • For a healthier version, bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Leftovers keep best in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; reheat in oven to refresh crispness.
  • Freeze uncooked, breaded mushrooms on a tray before transferring to freezer bags, cook directly from frozen for best results.
  • For vegan option, replace eggs with flax eggs or aquafaba and use plant-based breadcrumbs.
