Ingredients

For the Pasta

  • Bowtie pasta – 8 ounces
  • Olive oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Salt – for boiling water

For the Meatballs

  • Ground meat (beef, pork, chicken, or turkey) – 1 pound
  • Parmesan cheese, grated – ¼ cup
  • Fresh basil, chopped – 2 tablespoons
  • Fresh parsley, chopped – 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic, minced – 2 cloves
  • Onion, finely chopped – ½ medium
  • Breadcrumbs – ½ cup
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper – ½ teaspoon
  • Olive oil – 2 tablespoons (for cooking)

For Assembly and Serving

  • Wooden skewers – as needed
  • Marinara sauce – for dipping or drizzling (about 1 cup)
  • Optional garnishes: fresh basil leaves, cherry tomatoes, grated Parmesan, chopped parsley, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic glaze

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bowtie Pasta: Cook the bowtie pasta in salted boiling water until just al dente, about 9 to 11 minutes. Drain well and toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil to prevent sticking. Set aside to cool slightly before assembling.
  2. Mix and Shape the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground meat with minced garlic, finely chopped onion, chopped basil, chopped parsley, grated Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to keep the meatballs tender. Form the mixture into small, bite-sized meatballs that will fit well on the skewers.
  3. Cook the Meatballs: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides until thoroughly cooked, about 8 to 10 minutes depending on size. Alternatively, bake the meatballs in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15 to 20 minutes until cooked through.
  4. Assemble the Skewers: Thread the cooked bowtie pasta and meatballs alternately onto wooden skewers, starting and ending with pasta for a balanced and attractive presentation. Optionally, add fresh basil leaves or cherry tomatoes between items for extra color and freshness.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the skewers warm with a side of marinara sauce for dipping or drizzling. They are best enjoyed fresh but can also be served at room temperature for gatherings.

Notes

  • Avoid overcooking pasta to maintain its shape and firmness for skewering.
  • Use mini meatballs for bite-sized convenience and better skewer fit.
  • Lightly brush skewers with olive oil before assembling to prevent sticking and add extra flavor.
  • Fresh herbs such as parsley and basil enhance flavor and presentation.
  • Serve with a variety of dipping sauces such as marinara, ranch, or pesto for added flavor options.
